***EXTREME WEATHER ALERT FOR THURSDAY, December 22, 2022***
Based on a virtual meeting with the National Weather Service and St. Louis County Emergency Management, starting Thursday, the NWS is confident that:
• Strong winds up to 40 mph. Remove or secure objects in your yard or they will most likely blow away.
• Wind chill ranging -15 to -30 degrees and bitter cold (coldest since December 1989). Wind chill to remain through Saturday.
• Rain to begin around 11:00 AM and turn into snow in the St. Louis area. The heaviest snow is expected 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM. Snow should end around 9:00 PM. Expected snow accumulation is 2-4 inches across the region.
• Worst case weather scenario, do not leave your house for unnecessary reasons.
Dress appropriately if you have to go outside in the cold – frostbite can set in within 30 minutes.
Bring animals inside.
Remains from the initial rain will turn into ice on the roadways. Plows will remove snow but road salt and brine will have very little effectiveness, if not any at all, with temperatures that low.
