The University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s tennis team narrowly defeated Southern Indiana with a 4-3 victory in St. Louis on Saturday. This win brings the Tritons’ season record to 4-1, while Southern Indiana drops to 1-6.
UMSL secured the doubles point by winning matches at the number three and one positions. Anna Favaron and Lauren Sweeney defeated Anais Negrail and Claire Meyer 6-0, while Hannah Tse and Morgan Lint beat Antonia Ferrarini and Rylie Wilkison 6-4. The second doubles match between Millie Wileman/Aleksandra Lopez and Enna Krnjic/Sofia Davidoff was tied at 4-4 when it was left unfinished after UMSL clinched the doubles point.
In singles play, Giuliana Cunza gave UMSL an early advantage by sweeping Meyer 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. Southern Indiana responded as Negrail overcame Favaron in the fifth singles contest, winning 6-3, 6-4. Aleksandra Lopez extended UMSL’s lead with a straight sets win over Wilkison at No.3 singles (6-3, 6-4).
Southern Indiana rallied with victories in both No.1 and No.2 singles: Ferrarini beat Tse in a close match (0-6, 6-4, 1-0 [10-7]), and Davidoff edged out Wileman (6-3, 7-6 [7-3]). With the score tied at three apiece, Morgan Lint secured the deciding point for UMSL by defeating Krnjic in three sets (6-2, 4-6, 1-0 [8-7]) in the fourth singles position.
UMSL will next face McPherson on Sunday, March 15 at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center.
