November is Native American Heritage Month. Here in Maryland Heights we live on the land of the Myaamia (Miami-Illini),(Osage), (O-ga-xpa/Quapaw), (Kickapoo), and Kaskaskia tribes. Today in Missouri there are no federally recognized tribes. This is due to the forced removal of Native tribes during the “Indian Removal Act of 1830”. We encourage everyone to take some time to learn about American Indian and Alaskan Native history, traditions, and culture this month.
In the St. Louis area alone we have many significant Native American historical sites. If you don’t have the chance to visit major regional locations such as the Sugarloaf Mound and the Cahokia Mounds, we encourage you to take a walk through Creve Coeur Lake within Maryland Heights – the area was the site of a notable exhibition in the 1950’s for archaeological research, and saw many tribes thrive from that land over time.
One great way to start your education on American Indian and Alaskan Native history and culture is with the resources available at Washington University’s Kathryn M. Buder Center for American Indian Studies. You can find more information at buder.wustl.edu
