The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team opened its season with a 2-0 loss to Pittsburg State at Don Dallas Soccer Field on Thursday evening.

Pittsburg State's Carrie Cunningham broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute, converting a penalty kick after a late tackle in the Tritons' box. UMSL goalkeeper Rylee Griffith dove left, but Cunningham placed her shot to the opposite side, giving the Gorillas a 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later, Ella Cazzavillan added another goal for Pittsburg State. After regaining possession on the restart, Pittsburg State sent a ball over the top; confusion in the Triton defense over an offside call allowed Cazzavillan to score and secure the win.

Throughout most of the match, UMSL's defense limited Pittsburg State to six shots, with only two on target before the final minutes. Offensively, UMSL managed five shots. Their best opportunity came in the first half when Karley Kinzinger aimed for the bottom left corner, forcing Pittsburg State keeper Jocelyn Kramer into her only save of the game.

UMSL's Mary Kate Neal and Rylee Griffith each recorded one save during the contest.

The Tritons will continue their home stand this Saturday against Washburn at Don Dallas Field.
