UMSL men’s soccer shuts out Illinois Springfield for third win

The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team secured a 2-0 victory over Illinois Springfield at Don Dallas Field on Sunday. With this win, the Tritons now hold a record of 3-3-5 overall and 2-2-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC), while the Prairie Stars drop to 2-7-3 overall and 1-6-2 in conference play.

Goalkeeper Jack Franklin made two early saves in the first ten minutes, preventing Illinois Springfield from scoring. In the 29th minute, UMSL capitalized on a corner kick. Kyler Sorber delivered the ball across the box to Colton Milosch, who headed it toward goal. Roman Ryabchenko finished the play by scoring his first goal of the season.

Less than a minute later, Melo Mensah had an opportunity to extend UMSL's lead but was unable to get his shot past the opposing goalkeeper.

UMSL ended the first half with a 13-4 advantage in shots and led 5-2 in shots on target.

Illinois Springfield increased their offensive efforts at the start of the second half. Their best chance came in the 68th minute when Robin Lemke Bergseth found space in front of goal but sent his shot directly at Franklin.

Shortly after, Mario Garcia created another scoring opportunity for UMSL by winning possession near the corner and passing across goal to Milosch, who scored into an open net for his second goal of the season.

The Tritons outshot UIS 20-12 overall and held an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. Franklin finished with six saves, earning his third shutout this season.

UMSL will travel to Indianapolis on Friday, October 17, for their next match against UIndy at Key Stadium starting at 6:30 p.m. CDT.
