The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team secured its first win of the season and the first victory under new head coach Stephen Cavallo with a 3-0 result against Washburn on Saturday at Don Dallas Field.

The Tritons, now holding a 1-1 record, opened scoring in the 19th minute. Josie Maddox created space on the left side and delivered a cross into the box where Kennedi Hooks headed it in for her second career goal.

Gwen Maggard extended UMSL's lead in the 40th minute by converting a free-kick from about 25 yards out, sending the ball off the crossbar and into the net. This marked Maggard’s second career goal.

UMSL added another goal four minutes later following a corner kick taken by Maggard. She delivered to the six-yard box where Taylor Martin outpaced her defender and headed home UMSL’s third goal.

Goalkeeper Rylee Griffith started for UMSL and recorded six saves to earn her third career shutout and first of this season. One key save came late in the first half when she stopped an attempt from Washburn’s Leah Henke, preventing any shift in momentum before halftime.

Washburn (0-1-1) finished with more total shots than UMSL, 15 to 12, but UMSL had seven shots on target compared to Washburn’s six. The Tritons also led in corner kicks, five to four.

UMSL will host Northwest Missouri State on Wednesday, September 10 at Don Dallas Field for its final non-conference game of the season.
