Yvonne Shannon, defeated | Missouri St. Louis Tritons
The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's tennis team opened its season with a 7-0 win over Missouri Baptist at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis on Friday.
With this victory, the Tritons start their campaign at 1-0 while the Spartans fall to 0-1.
In doubles competition, UMSL secured all three matches to take the opening point. The No. 1 pair, Hannah Tse and Millie Wileman, defeated Yvonne Shannon and Melissa Jangarasheva in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-4). Aleksandra Lopez and Mogan Lint won their match against Lucia Rubio and Mariana Azevedo without dropping a game, finishing 6-0. Anna Favaron and Alexandra Cedeno completed the sweep with a 6-1 win over Jocelynn Carmody and Bissola Lassissi.
Singles play saw similar dominance from UMSL. Tse beat Shannon in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1; Lopez overcame Rubio, 6-0, 6-4; Wileman earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Carmody; Lint defeated Jangarasheva by a score of 6-0, 6-2; Favaron prevailed against Lassissi with a score of 6-3, 6-0; and Giuliana Cunza did not lose a game in her match versus Azevedo, winning 6-0, 6-0.
UMSL will continue its fall schedule on Saturday when it competes at the Southeast Missouri State Redhawk Fall Tournament at the John C. Bierk Redhawks Tennis Complex in Cape Girardeau.
