Don Dallas Soccer Field | Missouri St. Louis Tritons
The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team lost to Maryville University 5-1 in the St. Louis Derby on Sunday at Lonnie Folks Field. This result moves the Tritons to a record of 2-3-4 overall and 1-2-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC), while Maryville improves to 5-4-1 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
Maryville opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when Jan Fulnek's shot hit the right post, allowing Marcos Ayelo to score on the rebound. Shortly after, UMSL's Roman Ryabchenko had an opportunity to equalize but his shot was blocked.
Five minutes later, Tommy Barrell assisted Jacob Lund-Iversen for Maryville's second goal. Lund-Iversen scored again just over a minute later with help from Brendon Fournier.
UMSL narrowed the gap early in the second half when Max Matarelli scored his first collegiate goal in the 57th minute, assisted by Pablo Nodar. However, Maryville responded seven minutes later as Ayelo netted his second goal of the match with another assist from Fulnek. Less than a minute after that, an own goal by UMSL's Connor Randel extended Maryville's lead.
UMSL was outshot 15-8 overall and 9-2 in shots on target. Will Winkler made a career-high five saves for UMSL, while Benjamin Ocampo led the team with two shots.
The Tritons will return home to play McKendree this Friday at Don Dallas Field, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
