The University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team secured a 3-2 victory over Lewis University on Saturday at Neil Carey Arena in Romeoville, Illinois. With this win, the Tritons have extended their winning streak to 13 matches and now hold an overall record of 20-4, remaining undefeated at 10-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). The Flyers’ record moves to 13-11 overall and 4-5 in conference play.
This marks the fifth time in seven seasons that UMSL has achieved at least 20 wins during a season.
The match began with both teams tied at 10 points in the opening set before Lewis took control with a decisive run and claimed the first set 25-19. The Flyers recorded a .319 hitting percentage compared to UMSL’s .125.
UMSL responded in the second set after building an early lead. Despite a late push from Lewis, UMSL closed out the set with a block by Iyannah Jackson and Bridget Cassady and won it 25-20 following a service error by Lewis.
In the third set, UMSL led by ten points but was unable to maintain its advantage as Lewis rallied to win the frame 26-24. The fourth set saw UMSL break away from a tie at 13, scoring ten of the next thirteen points for a 25-17 win. Jackson and Alayna Santel combined for most of UMSL’s kills in that set.
During the deciding fifth set, UMSL built an early lead but faced resistance from Lewis before closing out the match with four straight points for a final score of 15-10. Santel contributed four kills while Cassady added three in that last set.
UMSL finished with a .224 hitting percentage and totaled 75 kills against 26 errors on 219 attempts. Santel and Maggie Johnson each had 20 kills; Cassady added 13, Jackson had 12, and Hannah Copeland recorded ten kills. Caitlin Bishop led with 63 assists; Skylar Weaver posted a season-high of 32 digs; Jackson also contributed four blocks.
Lewis ended with a .226 hitting percentage, tallying up 62 kills against nineteen errors on one hundred ninety swings. Ann-Kelly Velikov led her team with thirteen kills while Lauren Buxton had eleven. Lily King provided twenty-seven assists; Emma O'Neill finished with thirty-one digs; Sarah Newberry had seven blocks.
UMSL will begin its final homestand of the regular season on Friday, November 7th when they host McKendree at Mark Twain Building at six p.m.
