Missouri St. Louis Tritons swimming teams win home opener against William Jewell

The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's and women's swimming teams won their home opener against William Jewell on Saturday at the UMSL Swimming Pool. The women's team secured a 135-67 victory, while the men's team came from behind to win 104-101.

Libby Smith and Justice Beard each earned two wins for the women's team. Smith took first place in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:02.21 and the 400 individual medley at 4:44.35. Beard won the 200 freestyle in 1:53.98, with teammate Kelsey Roth finishing second, and later won the 500 freestyle in 5:01.53.

Other event winners for the women included Audrey Lantz in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.22. Ella Lantz and AeriLa finished first and second in the 200 backstroke, with times of 2:08.49 and 2:08.93, respectively. The women's 200 medley relay team—E. Lantz, Stella Garrison, Romina Itzkovich, and A. Lantz—won their race in 1:47.92. The 400 freestyle relay team of Beard, Itzkovich, A. Lantz, and E. Lantz also took first place with a time of 3:36.92.

On the men's side, Maxwell Wetteland won the 100 freestyle in 48.56 seconds, followed by Aaron Wicklund and Joan Cortadella Llubera in second and third place. Mikael Larsson claimed victory in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:54.68.

Donald Saunders, Landon Hanesworth, and Owen Frick finished second through fourth in the 200 freestyle event. In the 50 freestyle, Lathan Parks narrowly beat Gabriel Wells by .07 seconds with a winning time of 21.49 seconds; Wells followed at 21.56 seconds. Mattie Nardi placed second in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:12.10, while Dylan Bonnett and Wicklund took second and third place in the 200 breaststroke.

The men's 200 medley relay team—Wells, Nardi, Parks, and Gentry Comstock—finished first with a time of 1:35.05.

Trailing by ten points before the final event, the Tritons scored 15 points in the 400 freestyle relay to secure a three-point win. The second relay team of Comstock, Nardi, Saunders, and Larsson won with a time of 3:10.77; the "A" squad of Parks, Cortadellas Llubera, Wells, and Kaleb Suitor was close behind at 3:10.91.

The Tritons will host Rockhurst next Friday at 1 p.m., again at the UMSL Swimming Pool.
